OUGD403 - Message and Delivery : Research

From this studio brief I went and bought 3 newspapers;

The Daily Mirror
The Sun
& i

I flicked through each newspaper to identify the most common stories from each. Using post it notes I marked out the stories which intrigued me personally. As I have to work with this brief for one month I had to take extra care in my choices to make sure that the story was not too sinister.

One of the most common stories was about the upcoming James Bond movie; Skyfall. I was drawn to this article as I am a Bond fan and I also follow some of the previous actors who have played this iconic character. One worry of mine was that this story would pass over after the premiere on Tuesday 23rd October and the release on Friday 26th October, before dismissing this I looked into the story more and found that this year marked the 50th anniversary of the 007 movies. I thought this story could have more strands to it and felt it warranted more research to see what interesting facts I could dig up.

Another popular story in the Sun and Daily Mirror was the Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson cheating scandal which was made public in July this year. With the upcoming release of the final instalment of the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn Part 2, in November the couples relationship has become big news with many of the fans speculating whether they will rekindle their romance for the premiere in LA.

I have chosen these two stories as I think they are more lighthearted and could be interesting to work with. I have also been drawn to stories which interest me (film) which I think is an important aspect of this brief.

Other options could have been:
  • Jimmy Saville enquiry
  • Becky Edward's murder
  • Hotel worker email sent by mistake to bride and groom
  • Lance Armstrong being stripped of his titles and band from cycling for life
  • US Presidential elections
  • Beluga Whale speaking
  • Tuition Fees putting off Post-graduates
Though some of these stories could be considered more appropriate than the two I have chosen I think they are very gloomy. I plan on researching the two stories of my choice with a hope that I will find some useful information which will help me to create a visual outcome to the brief. However, if I cannot find any helpful information I will move onto to one of the above stories.

The latest Bond is played by the famous actor Daniel Craig. He has currently starred in three of the iconic 007 movies (Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and the upcoming blockbuster, Skyfall) and has revealed that he is signed on for a further 2 movies. In his recent interviews with the national press Craig has expressed how he feels about his age and playing this character. 'I'll be too old to play Bond at 44 3/4'

Though James Bond originated from the novels by Ian Fleming it is clear that the character is best known from film franchise which started in 1962.  Many different actors have had the opportunity to play this iconic character :

Sean Connery
George Lazenby
Rodger Moore
Timothy Dalton
Pierce Brosnan
Daniel Craig

The articles (taken from The Sun and The Daily Mirror)

Both of these articles consist of an interview with  Daniel Craig and his fellow cast members. Both interviews are personal but more so in the Daily Mirror where there is an extensive account into Daniel's personal relationships with women. As Bond is know to be a ladies man it would seem that the reporters have tired to project that image onto Daniel by revealing some of his indiscretions and relationships with his co-stars. I think the Mirror have done this because there was a debate into whether Daniel Craig was in fact the best person to play this part and they wanted to show him to have some of the same characteristics of James Bond.

This year marks 50 years of Bond which has become very popular with Sky devoting an entire channel to the franchise. An advert is seen in one of the articles which shows Sky's advertising for this channel. It includes images of each actor who has played Bond along with the Daniel.

Bond is represented in the same way throughout the franchise with his trademark black suit and groomed hair. I thought this franchise could have problems due to the multiple actors playing the character but, even with the change in cast, Bond has remained a national treasure with many men aspiring to be like him and women admiring the actors closely.

Sex appeal is very apparent in all of the actors who have played Bond. As everyone knows Bond is known for his womanising yet women still fall at his feet metaphorically.

Bond : The Character

The aesthetic of the character has not changed much since 1962 though each actor has added his own characteristic which sets them apart.

James Bond is probably known for his famous whit and catchy lines such as; 'Shaken not stirred' and 'Bond. James Bond.' These phrases are recognised globally and have become a trademark of the franchise.

Cars

James is seen driving some very 'flashy' cars in the movies which have also become another trademark. People debate about which car was the best in the movie. I think in some way the cars and women have become almost more important than the storyline.

The women in the Bond movies have acquired their own nickname: Bond Girls. The aesthetic of a bond girl is a young, slender, sexy, glamourous woman who is seduced by James.
