OUGD403: Message and Delivery : Distribution

Today we were given our brief which follows on from our previous brief when we designed our posters. Using this artwork we have to produce a mail shot that distributes, disseminates and reinforces your message to an appropriate list of recipients.

I have the idea to produce an info graphic as part of my mail shot. The posters I produced were in a similar style but I think I could extend the information by creating an info graphic.

I looked at a research study by the Home Office which informed me of the statistics behind domestic violence which I can include in my infographic.

Though I have found all of this information I have to make sure that I take into account that my mail shot has be high impact and convey a message straight away. I also have to consider the content of my mail shot and whether I will include free attachments like key rings, magnets etc. Though I would love to include all of these items I have consider cost of production as I will not be creating just one of each. Another way I could save money is to include my mail shot on the envelope rather than having an extra piece of paper inside.

OUGD403 - Domestic Violence : The Statistics

Statistics about Domestic Violence

Even though this info graphic is not about the UK I have chosen to display it as it encompasses the style I want to produce my posters in.

OUGD403 - Message and Delivery : Research Continued

Stereotypes is a very interesting topic to look in to. Men and Women are represented with very specific  roles within the media (men as the main breadwinner or hero, women as either a housewife or sex symbol.) These stereotypical ideologies were supported within the media with icons such as Marilyn Monroe and James Bond.

Women

The representations of women became more and more negative as the media progressed which prompted the introduction of feminism. The introduction of Feminists brought us the Women's suffrage act, with women demonstrating for equality and their right to vote.

My article was about domestic violence, I chose to look into stereotypes as a strand from my research. After looking into stereotypes and how men are represented in the media I was shocked by the facilities available for men suffering from domestic violence.

The facts I found about male domestic violence shocked me as I was unaware that men were killed by their partners. I had to ask myself why I did not know this information and I found that it is because male domestic violence is not made public enough whereas female domestic violence is published a lot more.

OUGD403 - Message and Delivery : Stereotypes in film

Film is perhaps one of the few forms of media where stereotypes are regularly enforced and challenged.

Bond
Bond reinforces the stereotypical representation of a man:

Strong
Handsome
Powerful
Protective
Sexy

The Hero.

Charlies Angels

Lara Croft and Charlie's angels both challenge and conform to the stereotype as they are women who use their sex appeal to get results but are also just as strong and powerful as a man.

Marilyn Monroe is a very stereotypical representation of a woman as she is seen as a sex symbol. When I googled her I found lots of pictures of her in provocative poses with lots of her flesh showing. Some women would think this is a negative representation of a woman.

Superheros are a further example of a stereotype as they are primarily male.

Avengers

Avengers Assemble is one of the few superhero movies which features a strong woman.

Mission : Impossible

Animated

Stereotypes also stem from animated movies especially the classic disney movies.

Disney Princesses

Mulan

Tangled

Mulan and Rapunzel (Tangled) are an example of disney trying to break away from the stereotypical ideology of a woman and turning her into a heroin who is strong and can 'look after herself'.

OUGD403 - Message and Delivery : Domestic Violence Awareness

When I looked into the subject of domestic violence I wanted to find some specific facts and figures to do with domestic violence and if it is more popular in men or women. Instead I noticed that the websites which offer help for people suffering domestic abuse are primarily for women. The top searches on google all came up with the Women's aid charity. I find this quite alarming as men also suffer from domestic violence even though it is not as widely publicised.

I also found the imagery related to male and female domestic violence with the female images being much more believable and the male images being focused more on humour. I think male domestic violence is represented very negatively and is not considered as serious as female domestic violence.

OUGD403 - Message and Delivery : Research Revived

After my crit I decided to change the focus of my research task to make it more focused on one subject. I have chosen stereotypes with particular focus on domestic violence and male and female representations.

James Bond is famous for his whit and charm with the ladies. It is common in each Bond movie for James to be with more than one woman. The franchise has not only become so popular because of the character but also the Bond girls and villains.

When people picture a Bond girl they usually see a gorgeous, slim and sexy woman who is wearing either very little or a beautiful ball gown. Bond girls are an example of a stereotypical representation of a woman being a sex symbol.

This idea has also found its way onto some of the cover art for Ian Fleming's novels with each title inside a woman's body.

Women in Bond movies are also represented as a damsel in distress, this is common in a lot of films. I found a story about Rihanna and Chris Brown which paints Rihanna as the victim and Chris as the villain. This is another common stereotype used in the media.

OUGD403 - Message and Delivery Research : Domestic Violence

Rihanna and Chris Brown

Taken from the Metro

The Rihanna and Chris Brown scandal has been ongoing for a number of years and with rumours of their reunion reported in the national press I have been drawn to researching the topic of violence.

In 2009 Rihanna was assaulted by Chris Brown resulting in a very public court case and Brown being sentenced to one year's probation and domestic violence counselling.

Statistics

It has been shown that 40% of domestic violence victim are male which is a surprising statistic as the subject is more commonly associated with women. I think domestic violence in males is not publicised to a satisfactory standard as people don't know how to approach the subject. As a designer I would find it very hard to represent male domestic violence rather than in women.

Some of the campaigns for domestic violence are very stereotypical with an image of a woman/man looking scared of battered. This is one of the few campaigns I have found which is slightly more interesting. I find this piece quite haunting and scary.

Another example of an ad for domestic violence without using an image of a real person. I think images like this which include random objects from around the household help to break the stereotypical image of a woman being the victim.

Article from Behance our past does not define us, letters written by domestic violence victims.
