OUGD405 - Routine Research : Interview

My Dad's partner was affected by the flooding in my town. She was affected in maybe the worst way, she lost her home and from this she was separated from her daughter as accommodation was supplied by other family members. This was a very stressful time for the whole family and disrupted life massively. I asked Vicky, as part of my primary research, to give me her account of the experience and also asked her what her next steps were.

OUGD405 - Routine : Primary Research

Local flooding - Todmorden.

During June this year my town flooded from some of the worst downpours in years. Although my town invested millions in flood defences since the last flood the rain was all to strong and shattered the lives of many locals. Businesses were destroyed and are still not open. The clean up was very swift though the insurance payments were very long and difficult. I took some photos of Todmorden during the floods.

OUGD405 - Routine : Secondary Research

From my broader research I have decided to investigate further into the clean up routines from natural disasters both nationally and internationally. It is has been reported in the news recently that the United Kingdom has been hit by some of the worst flooding in decades, this has resulted in wide spread clean up. Also there have been some large natural disasters over the past 10 years (tsunami, earthquakes etc.) I think it will be very interesting to investigate further into the clean up routine and how it has helped communities to rebuild.

National

International

Recently natural disaster have been occurring resulting in wide spread disruption and devastation. Below are a few images from the internet which illustrate how devastating a natural disaster can be for people across the world.

International volunteers have been a massive help in countries such as Haiti. Below is an image of a school being rebuilt. Even though the event happened several years ago volunteers are still needed to help rebuild the lives of the local people.

Shocking before and after photos of the Tsunami in Japan.

Rescue camps have been set up in the grounds of schools. This shows how desperate the people are for land and space to recover from this disaster.

Even though it would seem that the country is recovering as it is not publicised on the news on a regular basis these images above show that this is far from the case. The country is still in grave devestation and will be for several years.

Flooding in the UK

The UK are very lucky that they are not in any danger of a serious natural disaster but they do suffer from flooding multiple times a year.

Above is a map highlighting the worse affected areas in the UK for flooding.

Earthquakes and Natural Disasters

Japan was not only struck my the tsunami but is still under threat of radiation poisoning. As the nuclear plant was affected by the tsunami the area around the plant has had to be evacuated until the area is safe which could take up to 40 years.

Also with natural disasters comes the threat of disease.

Large scale debris clean up having to be put on the idilic beaches.

Funnels to let the smell of rotting debris escape.

Trucks going on and off the site every minute.

Large scale waste.

International volunteers still needed 8 months on.

The Japanese have spent over £300 billion on the clean up from the devastating tsunami and work still needs to be done.

Safety and Preparatory Routines

Health and Safety

With health and safety comes a whole set of visual signs which people have become familiar with other the years.

Air Hostess In case of emergencies routine. Possibly one one the most well known safety routine known by the human race. The air hostesses routine is something that some people (flyers) must know but some do not have the need to (people who do not fly).
