OUGD401 : Film Theory - Lecture Notes

An individual who have their own personal stamp on the film.

Examples of Auteurs.

Editor - Andre Bazin

Somebody who has control over a cultural object.
They celebrated the role of the director above any of the others.

Alfred Hitchcock framing up.

As a director you are taken seriously by being described as an Auteur.

Genre- following a specific format

Auteurs break the rules - they start genres off but do not follow them.

Sarris 1962
He tried to explain what made someone an Auteur.
It came down to three things.

Technical Competence
Directors style
Interior meaning (deeper meaning)

Why Hitchcock?

Huge Career
first films ver british and silent.
Globally known (worked in Europe and America)
Worked in a time where we didn't have sound, he had to convey something visually.
Started a lot of genres (American Slasher)
French new wave named him an Auteur.

Hitchcock learnt his craft in the early years of the 1920's.
He was very good a portraying a story visually.
Master of montage.

Hitchcock started out as an art director, he worked for a film company in Britain.
Hitchcock was sent to Germany.

The first dracular film.
Not showing the monster head on, suggesting it by shadow.

One of Hitchcock's first films, very much inspired by German film makers.

Subjective shot - putting yourself as another character in the scene.

Peering through a hole was repeated through Hitchcock films.

Vertigo - known as his masterpiece. Shows a mans fear of heights.

Quote from Hitchcock.

Hitchcock drew this story board.
Era of the code, couldn't show naked bodies, blood etc.
He fragments it to suggest rather than show.

He is always in his films as a background character.
He prefers visual narrative rather than dialogue.
He liked to use the same actors especially blondes.

The hair.
when the hair is up its sets the idea of sexual repression,
when the hair is down it gives a sense of calmness, relaxation.

Hitchcock is more interested in building up the tension throughout the film rather than at the end.
He prefers to show horror through the viewer.

Vision, sight is something that Hitchcock is interested in.

He is interested int he mind

Madness

subjective point of view.

Lots of repetition in Hitchcock films. Doubling up.

follows her around

Madeline thinks she is the woman in the painting. She thinks she is being haunted by a ghost.

Doing her hair very much like the painting.

They meet quarter of the way through the film.

Trees that live for a long time. The green is taken through the film.

He feels guilt.

Not about naturalism.

Colour filters to evoke surrealism.

Colour to tie the two characters together.

Through the film he transforms judy into madeline.

He likes to put himself in the film. Signing the film with his portrait.

Psychoanalysis was a huge thing in America.
Sigmund Freud had sparked lots of curiosity.

He collaborated with Salvador Dali.
Dali made a film where an eye was cut open.
Hitchcock re-produced this visually.

He made a film called the birds.
Uses them to convey fear and doom.

Being pecked to death by a crow

Roosting of birds who are going to attack a village.

We know he is a bad character because he has all of birds on the walls.

Birds for Hitchcock were very symbolic.

Hitchcock's fears.

Themes which Hitchcock revisits.
Ordinary people caught up in extra ordinary events.
Spying
Murder
Madness
Humor
Sexuality
Darkest corners of the human mind

Only one woman has won an oscar for best director.
Auteur director's are always men.
His wife worked on every film he made as a screen writer.

Hitchcock tells us what he wants us to know.

Auteur is an illusion. Films are complicated and are made by many people not one person.
