These facts are quite random which does mean that I do not have a specific structure to my cards but I do think that this adds to the concept as they are meant to be interesting facts that maybe people do not need to see but would find interesting. I did not know any of these facts before I started this task which means that I, in a way, acted as my audience for a time. The people I have told these facts were very surprised which was my intention.

OUGD405 - Research, Collect, Communicate : Product - Belly Band

A piece of feedback I received from my crit was to consider producing a belly bar to go around my book instead of binding it. I like the idea of doing this but I don't think it would work in the place of binding. I think this idea would work better if I produced a set of cards rather than a book.

The use of string in this design works really well with the colour scheme. As I have produced my work on brown stock I would have to find a type of string which is in keeping with the overall feel of my design.

I love this style of belly band and I think it adds a feel of fun to the design. I do think, however that this style is maybe a bit to up market and not in keeping with the organic design of my work.

This design is very simple which matches my designs perfectly. I am going to experiment with this kind of belly band as I feel that I could create something in this kind of style with my own twist. My idea is to have a coffee bean at the front of my belly band which contains all of the information needed.

This kind of belly band is also very appealing and would look really interesting in my designs. Though it is maybe too fancy for my designs I do feel that, if printed on the right stock, I could produce something which works very well within my work.

This example is also very appealing though I do feel that my design warrants a wider belly band so to be able to display the title of the book and for it to be legible from further away.

The thickness of this design is possibly too wide for my work as the cards are only A6 size. I do not need to display a lot of information on the belly band as the title is quite self explanatory.

The organic feel of this belly band is maybe too literal for my work. I do love the use of this material and the leaf adds more to the effect of the work. I also think that I need something which is rigid to keep my cards in place.

I have decided to go with the idea of creating a handbook so will have to choose certain facts which I want to include.

1. Who? When? Where? How?

For my first page I want to include a short summary or timeline of how coffee was discovered.

From the timeline shown above it is clear that coffee has a long and detailed history. Looking at this I am wondering whether a timeline is a good idea as it would have to be quite detailed. I could cut things out and keep it very simple with just a few events included but I am unsure how I would cut it down. 

After some mini evaluations with my peers and family I have decided to change my idea and make it really simple by having one illustration and sentence per page. I think this will make my book more engaging as people do not usually wish to read massive amounts of body copy. I will still include facts which I have found during this research but will spread it down into multiple pages.

One idea I would like to play with is designing packaging for coffee based on the specific country where it is being sold. I have already found some interesting packaging with images of people from the country in which the coffee was grown but I would like to experiment with patterns from each country. I will research into the different options available then choose my favourites to recreate.

After looking at some of the patterns from china I like the traditional designs a lot more than the more modern designs. I think I will try and adapt the traditional designs and make them more contemporary by increasing the stroke size of the the lines. I particularly like the dragon image which is usually associated with China. I think I will try out some drawings of this to see if my idea works.

When looking up Russian patterns I was surprised by the results. I did not expect their traditional patterns to be so colourful and flowery. I have never been to Russia and therefore do not have a good idea of the culture and what the imagery was like. I think if I was going to use Russia in my designs I would have to look into the culture more and pull shapes from my research and combine them to make my own pattern.

Japanese patterns are very similar to Chinese. I do think they would work really well in black and white, the colour scheme I would like to work in.

I have looked at some coffee info-graphics as well as some for other beverages. I am interested in producing an info-graphic in this style but I do think it has been done so many times before that I could not produce something which stands out significantly.

Focusing on less serious subjects such as just showing the world of coffee, where it originated and general facts would be fun and interesting but there wouldn't be an actual use behind the product with a target audience attached to it.

I really like these illustrations which show the different types of coffee which is available. I could look into which types of coffee are the most popular for Starbucks or Costa Coffee customers and produce illustrations like these. Although this idea is quite a fun task I think, again that it wouldn't have a specific purpose.

OUGD405 - Coffee Packaging

With the latest brief we have to explore our research theme with the aim to design a product at the end. We were given three different areas to look into;

• Product and Publication
• Product and Packaging
• Product and Distribution

My research theme is coffee, I think the area which would produce the best results would be product and packaging. Though this is the most obvious option to go for I think it could present some great design avenues. 

I started out by looking at cool and interesting packaging which I could adapt and use in my own way.

This design is very quirky yet simple which is the style I would aim towards. I am a fan of characterisation within design so I would be drawn to this if I saw it in reality. As most coffee drinkers are students and young professionals is style would appeal to them also.

This design has quite a retro feel to it. I do not think is style works well for coffee but I do like the use of colours. I think this style would work well for car oil or general prints.

I really love this design as it is not generic and looks interesting. I would love to create something along these lines within my work but I think I could struggle as it would be quite limiting within the breif of infographics.

This design is a lot more suited to the breif but I think it is a little over crowded and therefore looses some of its appeal. The colours used are also not that appealing and do not connote coffee. In saying this I think it would definately stand out on supermarket selves.

I particularly like this design as it is simple, clear and to the point. I think the use of photography is excellent and also a different colour for each packet means that each type of coffee is easy to spot and pick up. I could create something very similar to this though I would have to produce boxes as I do not have the facilities to print onto a packet.

If I was to produce coffee packaging I would think that this would probably be a style which I would use as it is quite simple to produce.

Another idea which could be quite interesting as most of the information would be on the belly band. Though this is a different concept I do think that I would be limited with the use of inforgraphics
