OUGD403 - Message and Delivery : Stereotypes in film

Film is perhaps one of the few forms of media where stereotypes are regularly enforced and challenged.

Bond
Bond reinforces the stereotypical representation of a man:

Strong
Handsome
Powerful
Protective
Sexy

The Hero.

Charlies Angels

Lara Croft and Charlie's angels both challenge and conform to the stereotype as they are women who use their sex appeal to get results but are also just as strong and powerful as a man.

Marilyn Monroe is a very stereotypical representation of a woman as she is seen as a sex symbol. When I googled her I found lots of pictures of her in provocative poses with lots of her flesh showing. Some women would think this is a negative representation of a woman.

Superheros are a further example of a stereotype as they are primarily male.

Avengers

Avengers Assemble is one of the few superhero movies which features a strong woman.

Mission : Impossible

Animated

Stereotypes also stem from animated movies especially the classic disney movies.

Disney Princesses

Mulan

Tangled

Mulan and Rapunzel (Tangled) are an example of disney trying to break away from the stereotypical ideology of a woman and turning her into a heroin who is strong and can 'look after herself'.
