OUGD501: Context of Practice - Practical (Making the Infographic)

____

The infographic:

I am creating an information graphic to show the results from my activity book. I want to ensure that my infographic links to my essay for synthesis. I thought that using the London Underground map to create

After I had selected each line individually I looked closely at each and make my own line that would work for my information graphic.

The design I came up with looked like this. I used the Bakerloo Line as the spine of my infographic and then took segments of the Central, Northern, Jubilee and Piccadilly line to create the different spin offs. I am very happy with the final result and I think that the link to the Underground map will ensure synthesis throughout the project.

Adding the subject matters as the end destinations. I want to create my information graphic to almost mirror the tube map, I want the readers to feel that they are going on a journey through type and image in wayfinding, I set each subject matter as an end destination for each line and the final destination is the Type, Image and Type and Image.

I wanted to add a way for readers to refer straight back to the activity book so I included some small images from the book, this allowed me to think of each symbol and sign as a station on the way to a destination.

After adding all of the symbols I was not sure about the colour of the line, I altered this to be navy blue so that it had a much less garish appearance.

Adding results:

After collecting my results I was able to calculate the percentages and create a smaller information graphic to show the results of the activity book. I chose to keep these very simple in rectangle format, I did this to ensure that the reader can easily decipher the results. The colour I used was in keeping with my website though I do think that it does clash with the navy blue of the line.

I chose to change these colours to a light grey, this fits with my publication cover and also looks quite friendly and easy to read.

____

Overall, I am very happy with the outcome of this information graphic, I am confident that the design is in keeping with the rest of my project and also the subject matter I have covered. I have chosen to leave the final result open for people to choose for themselves. I also believe that I have not tested enough people to be able to make a definitive answer of what would be better. I have my own personal opinion but I cannot speak for other people.

OUGD501: Context of Practice 2 - Practical (Results from Activity Book)

____

Results:

I tested 20 people between the age of 16 and 47. 60% of these people had a full driving licence and had passed a driving theory test. I asked people about their driving capabilities because of some of the content of my publication.

“Symbols can take longer to interpret than language when conveying a concept to someone who is unfamiliar with the symbols”

OUGD501: Context of Practice - Practical (Website Development and Design)

____

Website development:

I am creating my activity book in the form of an interactive website to give my project another level. I think that the website would be a great way for me to make my argument reach more people. The design of the site is going to be very simple and concise, there will be many similarities between my activity book and the website as it is pretty much the same thing but on a screen.

__

Site map:

I have devised a site map to allow me to look into what needs to be on each page and the hierarchy of information that I need to take into consideration for my site to work the best way it can.

Now that I have a solid plan of the site I can start to draw out some rough wireframes and scamps before I begin to mock up the design digitally.

These rough scamps allow me to set out what information needs to be on what page. Though when I start to design my website these might alter slightly due to usability I am happy with the initial drawings I have put together.

Digital mock up:

I wanted to dive straight in with this website as I have little time to design it, I know what my layout is going to look like and I have the relative information so all I need to do it put it together.

_____

Showing the tester pages:

I wanted a way to show how the test pages would work on the website. I used an online GIF maker to piece together each aspect and show how the section would work on the website.

OUGD501: Context of Practice 2 - Practical (Making the activity book)

____

The activity book:

I am creating an activity book based on the content of my essay. I want to make the booklet to a realistic standard, this includes stock, binding and size.

__

Choosing a stock:

I want to use an uncoated stock that resembles an old colouring book for children. I think that this would allow my book to be produced as cheaply as possible. I selected 6 samples of stock from the library.

The chosen stock:

I am printing the cover on Pearl Grey as it is heavier than the content stock. The content will be printed onto Bulky Newsprint. I have chosen these stock's because I think that the link best to the colouring book.

__

Binding method:

I looked at some examples of binding from books that I had in my room:

Spiral bound:

Open perfect binding:

Saddle stitched - staples:

Unbound - individual cards:

__

I think that saddle stitch staple is the best way to bind my book as it will also be the most cost effective and also suitable for the function of the book.

____

Size:

I am going to design my activity book at A5 scale. This allows me to print onto A4 paper and is also a good size to put all of my information onto it.

____

The grid:

__

Adding content:

First I have to decide on what content my book needs:

Now that I have the content in order I need to design the imagery for the inside. I can find some really good examples of the icons online but I want to draw them for myself.
